Queen Elizabeth II plans to visit Berlin in June 2015. Perhaps we can convince her to make a stop by Saarbrücker Straße 20/21 to officially welcome our two new employees Matt Pitt and Sarah Hough, who RCKT. hired from the land of fish & chips and afternoon tea. We make no secret here that London is one of our favourite European cities, and several of us are fans of Premier League football. So why not entice two of the island’s more promising creatives over to Berlin and help us build up our agency, make flat whites for the office and bring back some Pret a Manger when they return from vacation.

Let’s introduce the pair.

So, Berlin? What brings the both of you here?

Sarah: Moved here in Oct. 2013, after being asked to kickstart the creative dept for a startup. Both the challenge and change were exciting. Planned only to be here for six months, but fell in love with Berlin.

Matt: What makes Berlin so special to me is the whole startup vibe you feel here. It reminds me a bit of L.A. Unique is an overused word, but Berlin just is. The culture, history, people and the vast open spaces I’m not used to, combines to make the city something special.

What are your job titles and responsibilities?

Sarah: Creative Concept Manager. In short, coming up with the ideas.

Matt: My job title is Communications Manager and I am currently responsible for handling the media and making sure the word gets out about the next expansion or product.

Matt, rumour is you can speak fluent German. How did you learn the language?

Matt: I cheated. Well, not cheated, but sort of. I was born in Munich and grew up in Germany, though both of my parents are English. So I spoke English at home, and German with my mates.

Currywurst or Chicken Tikka Masala?

Sarah: I don’t eat meat, so neither but the veggie dishes here are ace!

Matt: Difficult choice. I love the Currywurst here, but prefer the Chicken Tikka Masala in London. How about both of them together?

You both have only been here [at RCKT.] a couple of weeks. What do you miss the most about the UK?

Sarah:  Most of my favourite people are in London, but they visit so all is good.

Matt: My mates. Fortunately, Berlin is just a short hop away from London. This summer, my flat will be turned into a hotel, I’m sure. Although a hotel charges money. That’s the only difference.

Have your colleagues been practicing their British accents and slang with you?

Sarah: Haha sadly, not as yet!

Matt: I was told to just speak English, but that’s because they liked my accent and not because I can’t speak German … I think 😉

Have you picked up any German habits or customs?

Sarah: Adjusting nicely to the big Sunday brunch culture.

Matt: I see myself as part German, so it’s already part of me. If you’re from North Germany, you will probably know my favourite custom: Kohlfahrt (go Google it).

Best thing about Berlin in no more than five words?

Sarah: Creative expression is everywhere.

Matt: I need one word: amazing!

Final Question: what should the Queen do outside of the standard protocol of her state visit?

Matt: I think she should spend the day with Mutti, beginning with a few drinks on the Weserstraße, followed by a couple of rounds of Karaoke in Mauerpark and ending with getting rejected at Berghain. Wait, you haven’t been turned away at Berghain? Then you haven’t been to Berlin!
